$950

A strong well patinated female mask from the Baule Tribe, Ivory Coast. The Baule of the Ivory Coast in Africa are known to have settled in their present location in the 18th century. They have developed an eloquent, extraordinarily refined style of woodcarving. They impart to their carvings an incomparable seductiveness of surface detail as well as a deceptive complexity of structure. Masks are abundantly produced by the Baule. They are closely related to Guro types. The rhythmic connection of the circular arrangements of the horns with the oval of the face beneath is subtly underscored by the presence of tiny, pointed ears which lie between. The nearly closed, heavy-lidded eyes are characteristic. This is an excellent small example of Baule mask, exhibiting many of the characteristic features of Baule sculpture. The hair is especially finely carved. Measures 11 and one half inches high by 6 and one third inches wide by 4 and one half inches deep, excellent condition. Probably dates from the middle of the 20th century good evidence from the wear on the sides of the back that it was used in a tribal dance or ritual. Shipping extra. This head is Kiganda. This is tricky: the tribe is Buganda; their name for people and things is Kiganda; an individual is a Muganda; and their language is Luganda. One can understand why they are now simply referred to as Ganda. The Ganda are the most important ethnic group in Uganda (a country in East Africa). The head is of mvuli wood but it is not a traditional carving. We would hesitate to call it a Ganda head although it was certainly made by someone from Uganda probably around 1950 or so. The head measures 7 and one half inches high by 5 and one half inches long by 2 and three quarter inches wide. Shipping extra. $5950

Ashanti Chieftain's chair of wood and stretched hide, with hammered brass tack and bell shape applied decorations. This 19th century chair from the Ghana, in western Africa, shows in its form the influence of the Portuguese traders who were actively trading in the region in the 17th century. These chairs in original condition are rarely found. The Ashanti tribe is the largest tribe in Ghana, and one of the few matrilineal societies in Africa. Ashanti kings retained figurehead status after colonization, and even today great pride in the Ashanti King lives on in the tradition of the golden stool. This chair is all original. Just a few tacks are missing, and one side rail is pushed in a bit from use. Measures 30 inches high, 16 inches wide, 17 inches deep. Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6% state sales tax.
