This scene is quite striking and unusual, beautifully executed by an accomplished and anonymous painter. The painting is unsigned and in its original, period frame. Modern art print by American artist "George Giusti" AGI, ADC, NDAD Born: Milan 10 October 1908. George Giusti of Italian and Swiss parentage, was trained at the Reale Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan. He worked as a designer in Lugano from 1928 to 1930 and in Zurich from 1931 to 1937, then went to the United States and for about a year was employed in government offices in Washington,D.C. Having moved to New York in 1939, he started a freelance practice and designed posters and various forms of publicity material for the US Department of Agriculture, the US Army Air Corps and joined the Famous Artists Schools, Westport, Conn.,in 1959, and now acts as editorial and advertising designer and consultant for industrial concerns and publications. His work was shown at the AGI exhibitions as well as in New York, San Francisco, Rochester, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and under the auspices of the State Department, in South America, Europe and Japan. Between the years 1945 and 1959 he won ten gold and silver medals and thirty other awards, and in 1958 was elected Art Director of the Year and awarded the Golden T-Square. John Schueler oil painting Mallaig Vaig Scotland 1958. This oil on canvas by "Jon Schueler" was painted in Scotland and given as a gift to his companion Elise. Measures 80 inches by 71 inches and is signed on the front and back. This is a very important painting by Jon because it was painted in Scotland where he had his studio and exhibited at the world famous New York gallery of Hirsch and Adler. The original gallery sticker is on the reverse side of the painting. Hand written "Jon Schueler Winter Sunday Mallaig Vaig,1958" There has just been a book published about Jon Schueler and his work entitled "The Sound of Sleat" edited by Magda Salvesen and Diane Cusineau published by Picador New York. It mentions Schueler in Mallaig Vaig and his connection with Elise. Jon Schueler was taught by Clyfford Still and Willem de Kooning. See Who Was Who in American Art page 2941 where there is huge biography on the artist. Jon Schueler was one of the best artists of his day. He exhibited at the major galleries, hung out with the important collectors,dealers in New York City and was a very important part of the Abstract expressionist movement that took place in New York in the 1950 to 1960 period and had many exhibitions at the countries premier galleries of the day.
