This image is signed lower right John Taylor Arms 1932. The lower left is marked Private Collection "a" II. The frame measures 18 and one half by 12 and one half inches and the view part of the image itself measures 7 and on quarter by 10 seven eighths and one half inches. Excellent condition. He studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, graduating in 1912. After World War I, he devoted himself full-time to etching, the printing process that relies on acid to "bite" out an image drawn on a metal plate. From his early interest in sketching,Arms developed a successful career as a graphic artist in the 1920s and 1930s. He specialized in etchings of medieval churches and cathedrals, hoping to convey the glory of earlier ages that endured in Europe's architecture. Arms made several trips to France, Spain, and Italy to draw such buildings. Beginning with studies of architectural details, he later rendered entire facades and finally a great number of buildings and their reflections in water, as in The Grand Canal. In addition to his medieval subjects, Arms made a series of prints of American cities.[This is an excerpt from the interactive companion program to the videodisc American Art from the National Gallery of Art. Produced by the Department of Education Resources, this teaching resource is one of the Gallery's free-loan educational programs.] See John Taylor Arms A Man For All Time The Artist and His Work by William Dolan Fletcher page166 for more information on this etching. Large folio handcolored swan lithograph by Edward Lear (del. et lith.). Printed by C, Hullmandel. Bewick's Swan, plate 356. From John Gould's The Birds of Europe, 1832-37. Excellent condition, handsomely mounted and framed. Purchased from W. Graham Arader circa 1980. Frame is 27.25 x 21.75; image is 19.5 x 13.75. Edward Lear, one of the greatest ornithological artists of his era, was a self-taught naturalist and painter who later became famous as a writer of nonsense and limericks. Lear¹s exacting and masterly skill as an artist was employed by many major publishers of 19th century English ornithologies and natural histories. Born outside London in 1812, Lear was the 20th child of Jeremiah Lear, a London stockbroker. In 1816, Jeremiah went bankrupt, and Edward was raised primarily by his elder sister, Ann, who provided classical studies and taught him to draw from nature. At age 14, Lear began his career as an artist. About 1828, Lear began work as a zoological draughtsman, working with, among other notables, Prideaux John Selby. It was there he also met John Gould, the Society¹s taxidermist, who became one of the great 19th century naturalist publishers. Lear drew 68 plates and many of the foregrounds for Gould¹s Birds of Europe (1832-1837). Shipping extra. Connecticut residents and buyers picking up in Connecticut add 6.35% state sales tax. Sol Lewitt aquatint of a cube in a square. Signed lower right S LeWitt TP (TP stands for test proof). Vibrant colors, no fading. Acquired directly from the artist. Framed by Chester Gallery in Chester, CT. The frame measures 20 x 27 inches, the print measures 19 x 26 inches and the image itself measures 14 x 21 inches.Sol LeWitt was born in Hartford, CT, to a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia. His mother took him to art classes at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford. After receiving a BFA from Syracuse University in 1949, LeWitt traveled to Europe where he was exposed to Old Master painting. Shortly thereafter, he served in the Korean War, first in California, then Japan, and finally Korea. LeWitt moved to New York City in 1953 and set up a studio on the Lower East Side, in the old Ashkenazi Jewish settlement on Hester Street. During this time he studied at the School of Visual Arts while also pursuing his interest in design at Seventeen Magazine, where he did paste-ups, mechanicals, and photostats. In 1955, he was a graphic designer in the office of architect I.M. Pei for a year. Around that time, LeWitt also discovered the work of the late 19th-century photographer Eadweard Muybridge, whose studies in sequence and locomotion were an early influence. These experiences, combined with an entry-level job as a night receptionist and clerk he took in 1960 at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, would influence LeWitt's later work.
