Portrait of a Friesen Woman, Unsigned, Dated 1750
Oil on hand-woven linen. The sitter, a widow, wears a black beaver hat,
a lace-trimmed cloak, and mourning beads. She holds a prayer book,
indicating that she could read - unusual for a woman of her time. The frame
is antique but not original. Note: Friesen, or Friesland, is the northernmost
province of Holland on the North Sea.
