Born in Portland, OR 9/23/1880. Moved to San Francisco with his family in 1888. Studied at Mark Hopkins Art Institute 1896-1901, first job as a sketch artist for San Francisco Examiner. William Randolph Hearst noticed his talent and encouraged him to move to NYC, and he did in 1913. Illustrated for Harper's Bazaar, Saturday Evening Post, Colliers. "Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita" This "Japanese Watercolor" over pencil on paper measures 24 and three eighths inches wide by 21 and one eighth inches tall outside the frame and the image measures 15 inches wide by 11 and three quarter inches tall. circa 1937. aka Fujita Tsuguji. 1886 to 1968. Graduated Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1910. By 1910 he had received several medals and prizes; the Japanese Emperor even purchased one of his paintings. On a trip to Korea in 1911, he was asked to paint the king. Foujita seemed destined for a career in the Orient until he traveled to London in 1912 and then, in 1913, went to live in Paris. He discovered European contemporary art, much as the French, in the nineteenth-century, had discovered Japanese prints. Foujita had his first exhibition in Paris in 1917 and by 1924 he was one of the most important exhibitors at the Salon d' Automne. John Byam Shaw watercolor illustration labeled verso Woman Turned Serving Man. John Byam Shaw was born in Madras, India, in 1872, and died in London in 1919. He studied at the St. Johns Wood School of Art and at the Royal Academy School. Later, he and Rex Vicat Cole were partners in the School of Art in Campden Hill. Shaw worked in oil, watercolour, pastel, pen and ink, and also used such techniques as dyeing and gilding. He painted in the truth and sincerity style of the Pre-Raphaelites, using pure pigments that resulted in brilliant jewel tones. French J. Dodd House in a Park watercolour landscape painting 1837. This wonderful landscape watercolor depicts a large estate with horse, people, cows, horses, haystacks and a church in the distance. This watercolour was painted by J Dodd of Paris in 1837. Dodd exhibited from 1832 through 1839. The original birdseye maple frame measures 20 and one half inches by 15 and one quarter inches and the watercolor measures 12 and one half by 18 inches.
