Rare primitive Dogon double door with carvings of turtles . Each door measures approximatley 10 inches wide by 20 inches high.The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of Mali, south of the Niger bend near the city of Bandiagara in the Mopti region. The population numbers between 400,000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their mythology, their mask dances, wooden sculpture and their architecture. These doors protected the window-like opening into each family's grain storage building, and used a simple sliding door lock. Primordial beings, ancestors, Kanaga masks, sun lizards and scenes of life symbolically served to protect the entrance by making it sacrosanct Shipping extra. It sits on a 5 inch tall carved base that is not original to the figure but dates from the same period. The sculpture was originally displayed out of doors. Rare and important Italian 14th century iron sculpture of a mythological figure holding a snake (water god) from the Samuel Yellin collection. This very early European sculpture was documented in the catalog (page 16) for the "Made of Iron" exhibit held at the University of St Thomas Art Department, in Houston, TX, in 1966. Pieces were loaned to this exhibit by many important collectors and institutions, including among others J D Rockefeller lll and the New York Historical Society. Noted Philadelphia, PA, metal artist Samuel Yellin collected fine and rare examples of ironwork. He donated several pieces to the Metropolitan Museum of Art which are in its permanent collection. Unsigned pair of Luke Gwilliam bronze sculptures of nude male torsos c1960 to 1970. Luke Guilliam was born 1911 and died in 1989. Gwilliam joined the New York art scene in 1951 after graduating from Worchester Art Museum when he was forty years old. His paintings were very well received in the 1950 and 1960's,often mentioned in the New York Times exhibit reviews. He was included in museum exhibits at the River Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Society of Four Arts, and the Brooklyn Museum. Born in New York City, he grew up on a Kibbutz in Israel. studied as an apprentice to Israeli Sculptors Y. Shemi, and later with I .
